비트코인 알트코인 열풍 그리고 Money never sleeps.

"돈은 결코 잠들지 않는다(Money never sleeps)"는 말은 80년대를 풍미한 명대사 중 하나다. 현대 자본주의 사회에서 돈과 같이 강력한 힘을 발휘하는 것은 없을 것이다. 때로는 다정하게, 때로는 간사하게, 그리고 음흉하면서도 소리 없이 움직이는 것이 돈이다.

 

때는 2001년. 증권 사기죄로 8년을 복역한 고든 게코(마이클 더글러스)가 출소한다. 한때 월 스트리트의 전설이었지만 그의 초라한 행색이 현재 그의 위치를 말해준다. 아내와 이혼했고 마약을 하던 외아들은 숨졌다. 마지막 남은 딸 위니(캐리 멀리건)마저 그와 의절한 상태다. 위니의 남자 친구 제이콥 무어는 월 스트리트의 촉망받는 펀드 매니저다.

제이콥 무어는 그의 스승인 루이스 제이블(프랭크 란젤라) 밑에서 엄청난 수익을 올리는 신예 투자가로 승승장구한다. 그러던 어느 날, 제이콥의 거대 투자회사가 누군가의 계략으로 인해 하루아침에 망한다. 스승으로 따르던 루이스 제이블은 뉴욕 지하철에 몸을 던진다. 회사는 파산하고 무어는 빚더미에 앉는다.

고든 게코는 "탐욕은 좋은 것(Greed is good)"이라고 말한다. 탐욕에 대한 게코의 주장처럼 배신과 사기, 거짓 등은 월 스트리트에서 이제 거의 `합법화`되고, `정당화`됐다. 게코는 자신의 집에 찾아온 제이콥에게 인간의 탐욕이 불러온 역사상 최초 금융투기라고 일컬어지는 1600년대 네덜란드의 튤립 투기 이야기를 들려준다. 영화의 배경이 되었던 2008년의 투기 대상은 튤립이 아니라 주택으로 바뀌었을 뿐 인간의 끝없는 탐욕은 계속된다는 것이 이 영화 전반에 흐르고 있는 감독의 시선으로 느껴진다. 탐욕이 일상화될 때 우리 곁을 조여 오는 위험에 무뎌질 수밖에 없다. 자기 자신을 바로 아는 것이야말로 탐욕에 둔감해진 이성을 깨우는 것이라고 믿는다.

"Money never sleep" is one of the famous lines of the '80s. Nothing in modern capitalist society would be as powerful as money. It is money to move around, sometimes affectionately, sometimes obtusely, and insidiously and silently.



It was in 2001. Gordon Gecko (Michael Douglas), who served eight years for securities fraud, is released from prison. Once a legend on Wall Street, his humble appearance tells him where he is now. He divorced his wife and his only son, who was on drugs, died. Her last daughter, Winnie (Carry Mulligan), is also in a state of disapointment. Winnie's boyfriend Jacob Moore is a promising fund manager for Wall Street.

Jacob Moore is on a roll as a rising investor with huge profits under his mentor Louis Jable (Frank Angela). Then one day, Jacob's investment giant goes bankrupt overnight because of someone's trick. Louis Jable, who used to be his teacher, throws himself on the New York subway. The company goes bankrupt and Moore is in debt.



Gordon Gecko says "Greed is good." Like Gekko's insistence on greed, betrayal, fraud, and falsehood are now almost legalized and justified on Wall Street. Gekko tells Jacob, who visited his house, the story of tulip speculation in the 1600s in the Netherlands, which is said to be the first financial speculation in history brought about by human greed. The director's view throughout the movie is that the target of speculation in 2008, which was the background of the movie, has been changed to a house, not a tulip, but the endless greed of humans continues. When greed becomes commonplace, it will inevitably become dull at the risk of tightening our sides. I believe that knowing yourself right away is waking up to reason insensitive to greed.

Synopsis
