서태지 첫 방송 나가자 가요계가 뒤집어졌다

데뷔무대 10점 만점에 7.8점… 23일 음반 발매 20주년
‘난 알아요 이 밤이 흐르고 흐르면….’ 1992년 4월11일이었다. 긴장한 기색이 역력했던 TV 속 청년 셋은 연신 가쁜 숨을 몰아쉬고 심사위원들을 응시했다. 마른 침을 삼키느라 목젖이 크게 움직였고, 이마엔 송골송골 땀방울이 솟아났다. 생소하고도 앳된 신인팀은 올해로 데뷔 20주년을 맞는 ‘서태지와 아이들’(서태지, 양현석, 이주노)이었다.
MBC <특종! TV연예>의 코너 ‘신인 무대’를 준비하던 PD, MC, 심사위원들은 이날 이후 벌어질 일을 짐작하지 못했다고 했다. 토요일이었고, 봄비가 내린 평범하고 조용한 주말이었다. ‘서태지와 아이들’은 이날 데뷔곡 ‘난 알아요’로 단박에 톱스타가 됐다. 당시 MC를 맡고 있었던 선배 가수 임백천씨(54)는 그때의 분위기를 또렷이 기억했다.
“전무후무한 일일 겁니다. 방송 한 번에 가요계는 물론 나라가 온통 뒤집어졌으니까요. 우리도 처음엔 그게 뭔가 싶었습니다. 며칠 후 길거리를 나서는데 가게들이 마치 약속이나 한 듯 ‘난 알아요’란 노래를 틀더군요. 크리스마스 이브 때 거리 곳곳에서 캐럴이 들리듯이….”
MC 임백천씨는 이날 두 신인 팀의 앨범을 꺼내들고 소개하는데, 한 팀은 서태지와 아이들, 그리고 또 한 명은 뜻밖에도 현재 방송인으로 활약 중인 지석진씨였다. 지씨에게는 “분위기 있는 가수네요”란 설명이 붙었다. 여러 예능 프로그램에서 “서태지와 데뷔 동기”라고 농을 걸고 다닌 지씨의 근거가 바로 여기에 있다. 서태지와 아이들이 당시 심사위원들로부터 받았던 점수는 10점 만점에 7.8점. 심사위원의 평은 제 각각이었다. 훗날 과하게 ‘지적질’을 했던 심사위원은 팬들로부터 두고 두고 시달림을 겪었다.
가요계와 사회 전체에 수많은 현상을 만들어냈던 ‘서태지와 아이들’. 정식 데뷔일은 1집 <난 알아요>가 발매된 3월23일이다. 이들의 출현은 대중음악계의 지형을 바꾼, 말 그대로의 ‘사건’이었다. 현재 대중 가요계 속에서 발견되는 패턴 중에는 서태지와 아이들로부터 유래한 게 많다. 예컨대 가수들이 정규 앨범을 내고선 휴지기를 갖는 건 서태지 출현 이전에는 없었던 일이었다.
서태지의 전과 후에 따라 구별되는 것 중에는 팬클럽문화도 포함된다. 팬클럽은 이후 적극적이고 조직적으로 변모했다. 음악에 패션이 가미돼야 한다는 생각, 여러 장르를 맞붙여 시너지를 꾀해보려는 시도 역시 이때를 기점으로 본격화된다.
임진모 대중음악평론가는 “서태지가 나타난 뒤 발생한 변화는 광범위하다”며 “음악적으로 보자면 포크와 발라드 중심의 한국 가요계가 비로소 흑인음악과 댄스음악, 그리고 새로운 시대 의식을 담보로 하는 ‘세대음악’을 맞이하게 됐다”고 말했다. 또 “과거 정치·경제 주도의 시대가 문화 주도의 시대, 청년 문화 중심의 시대로 넘어가는 신호탄 역시 이 때 쏘아올려졌다”고 말했다.
1990년대 말 이후 지금까지 아이돌 그룹이 확고히 자리매김된 것 역시 서태지와 아이들이 남긴 족적이다. 여럿이 뭉쳐서 춤과 랩, 노래를 함께 하는 외형은 서태지와 아이들이 꾀한 파격적인 형식과 닿아있다. ‘서태지 키즈’, 그리고 ‘서태지 시대’는 아직도 유효한 셈이다.

It was Saturday, a normal, quiet weekend with spring rain. "Seo Taiji and the Children" became top stars with their debut song "I Know." Lim Baek-cheon (54), a senior singer who was in charge of MC at the time, clearly remembered the atmosphere.
"It's going to be nothing. Not only the music industry but also the country was turned upside down at once. We were wondering what it was at first. A few days later, I was out on the street and the shops played a song called "I Know" as if they had promised. Like carols are heard all over the street on Christmas Eve....”
MC Lim Baek-cheon brings out and introduces the albums of the two rookie teams, one of which was Seo Tai-ji and Boys, and another, Ji Seok-jin, who unexpectedly plays as a broadcaster. Ji was described as "an atmospheric singer." This is the basis for Ji, who used to joke around with Seo Tai-ji on various entertainment programs, saying, "My motivation for debuting with Seo Tai-ji." Seo Tai-ji and the children received 7.8 out of 10 from the judges at the time, and the judges had different reviews. The judge, who later went too far, suffered from fans.
'Seo Taiji and Children', which created numerous phenomena throughout the music industry and society. The official debut date is our first album, "I Know."It was released on March 23. Their appearance was a literal "event" that changed the landscape of pop music. Many of the patterns found in the popular music industry now originate from Seo Tai-ji and children. For example, it was not before Seo Tai-ji appeared that singers took a break after releasing a full-length album.
Among the distinguished things between before and after Seo Tai-ji is fan club culture. The fan club has since become active and organized. The idea that fashion should be added to music and attempts to create synergy by confronting various genres will also begin in earnest at this time.

The fact that idol groups have been firmly established since the late 1990s is also a legacy of Seo Tai-ji and his children.
